A circle is complete yet empty, an infinite line, with no beginning and no end. It has no sides; it literally encompasses. As a subject of Zen calligraphy, the circle, or ensō, represents enlightenment and the universe itself. In Zen practice, however, the point of drawing a circle is not to communicate meaning, but to enact the practice of mindfulness, emptiness, openness--to express the ineffable.
