In the first incarnation of the Drawing Gym in Fargo, North Dakota, I taught eighty-eight individuals to make drawings while pushing their bodies through various exercise stations. In 2011, I studied to become a certified personal trainer, and through collaboration with the Bayview Hunter’s Point Y, went to work with volunteers in the community. In Drawing Gym 2: This Time It’s Personal, I pushed eleven participants to reconnect with the creative potential of their physical bodies by using the activity of drawing to record their movement and physical changes over time.
Drawing Gym 2: This Time It’s Personal is supported by a San Francisco Artist Commission Individual Artist Grant, as well as an Investing in Artists grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation, and was created in close collaboration with the Bayview Hunters Point Y and Bayview Beacon. Additional support provided by Art 94124 and 5800 Third Street, and the volunteer efforts of Selina Chavez, Jon Mejia, Shirin Makaremi, Charlotte Russell, Caleb Hampton, Richard Harkins, Julia Gulotti, and Adam Glimme.
